Don’t Cut Costs in These Five Areas

Business, Journal,  Journal,  Principals

While reducing costs and creating processes that will save your business money is a mandate that every real estate principal has tackled at some point, there are some parts of your business that may not be wise to reduce spending in

What does running a household and running a business have in common? In most cases, they both run on a budget, and cutting expenses is an ongoing exercise. But just as there are some areas of your household you wouldn’t think of cutting expenses, there are also some areas of your business that require a little more consideration before deciding to reduce costs. These are some of the areas that small business owners may want to think twice before cutting costs in.

1. Technology Safety Measures

As a real estate business, you probably have some form of digital presence including the storage of valuable customer data. As a result, IT security should be one of your top priorities, and an area that may not be wise to cut costs in. Cybercrime continues to become more and more sophisticated  every day and downgrading your security levels makes you more susceptible to falling victim to an attack. The consequences of suffering a cyberattack can be costly, and  few small businesses can make it through  without their financial health being thrown into jeopardy.

In addition to IT security software, it’s also worth considering  Cyber Insurance  for your real estate agency to help cover the financial losses you may suffer if you were to experience a cyberattack.

2. Insurance for Your Business

When it comes to insuring your real estate agency, there are a lot of options to choose from, and comparison websites can make it very appealing to go with the cheapest option. But in this instance, the cheapest policy may not always offer the best cover. While it’s reasonable to shop around between different providers and brokers to make sure you’re getting the best deal overall, it’s also important to carefully review the cover you’re receiving under each policy to ensure it suits your needs. Choosing a broker who has a thorough understanding is also a good idea.

3. Your Product/Service Quality

Cutting costs in areas that directly impact the quality of your service may save you money in the short term, but in the longer term, the resulting lost customers and damage to reputation may be even more difficult to repair. According to Cameron Woodcroft from  Pilot Partners, “Reducing costs in areas of your business that drive income and growth may reduce potential revenue, and this is ‘a big no-no.’ You should also think twice about reducing investment into areas of your business that you expect will generate future growth for your business. If it’s absolutely necessary to make this investment, think about just pausing these expenses as a temporary measure.”

4. Staff

While it’s inevitable that at some stage you may need to look at your staffing levels, it’s also important not to make this your default option every time business starts to slow down. Providing employees with job security will benefit your business with improved morale and productivity. However, if you find yourself needing to reduce staff costs, consider other ways such as reducing hours, enforcing annual leave or even temporarily reducing salaries. Just remember to get advice from a qualified employment lawyer prior to taking any of these steps to ensure you’re making all the right moves legally.

Another area to avoid trying to save costs is when hiring an employee – how your business thrives will depend greatly on the calibre of your people, so when hiring a new staff member, try not to hire a candidate willing to accept the lowest salary. Instead, choose a candidate who you feel is genuinely right for the role.

5. Marketing that Works

Marketing budgets are often another area that get cut when a business’s financial performance starts to suffer. While you may need to reduce costs on your overall marketing, it’s important not to reduce spend entirely on areas that have been proven to bring you results. For example, if you’ve been advertising on multiple social media platforms, consider running your advertising on one channel that has proven the most effective.

I found the REIQ Real Estate Licence Online Training Course was very good, easy to access, with brilliant course materials to read and assignments that really checked on your understanding of the details of every aspect of real estate practise. I enjoyed the course even though it took a few months due to working full time and found the support of the trainers and assessors very helpful and encouraging. Thanks REIQ Training team for helping me through!

I would like to share with you our experience that we have recently had through the REIQ Professional Development Team.We have had an awesome start to 2020 thanks to the great service provided by the REIQ Professional Development Team. Congratulations to Liz who started and finished her Certificate of Registration Course with the REIQ in December 2019. She loved the training, particularly the fact the trainers are experienced and still walk the talk and are active in real estate. Fast turnaround for marking of the assessments with help on hand by way of tutoring if needed meant she could get the Application to Office of Fair Trading for her registration happening quickly. We are thrilled, from start to finish with the course and application to Fair Trading she had her Certificate of Registration within 5 weeks. Really impressed with the training, help and support team REIQ gave Liz and the quick processing time by the Office of Fair Trading. We also regularly use the Property Management Support Service and General Agency Advice Service and believe it offers great value for our membership. The PMSS team provide practical advice by practising property management professionals who can relate to the everyday challenges property managers face.Keep up the good work Team REIQ,

Recently completed my Licence course and thoroughly enjoyed the in-class tutorials taught by highly professional trainers with many years of industry experiences. The student support that is available every Tuesday is an extremely helpful resource, again with very experienced trainers to ensure you get the right advice the first time. REIQ has really structured the entire full Licence course end to end thoughtfully, especially when you’re new to this industry. Highly recommended!

I wasnt sure that I would get through the Agents and Licence course with everything I had on, made an attempt a year ago with another provider that went totally pear shaped but the REIQ course is structured in a way that made sense. While all of their trainers are experts in their field, they offer onsite student support on Tuesdays with Rachel providing the right advice and reassurance to get you there, even if you havent studied for a while. If you've ever wanted a career in Real Estate this is where you get started!

I contacted REIQ, as I wanted to upgrade my real estate licence to a full licence. I have now completed the necessary upgrade and I just wanted to thank all the staff and trainers who were my guides during this time. Particular mention to Rachael Wilschefski who did everything she could to help me and was a joy to talk to, Trudi Fleet was a fantastic support to me and a big thank you to the assessing team. If anyone is considering using REIQ to get their licence or upgrade, I highly recommend using REIQ. Once again, thank you. Helen Knight

In February I decided to take steps to buy management rights to a unit complex. As I have not studied for some time I chose REIQ to do my RLA course. Initially I didn’t engage the help through student support but it came to a point I needed some assistance. Selina Randall and Connie McKee were wonderful help. I personally feel they went over and beyond to help me complete the course and enable me to follow through with final settlement of the new business in just a few weeks Thank you so very much ladies. You were both amazing
