Do Queensland real estate agents need to accumulate CPD points?
Starting 6 June 2025, real estate agents in Queensland will need to complete approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training every year to keep their real estate licence or certificate valid.
What are CPD Requirements?
Although real estate agent CPD points are compulsory in other jurisdictions, there is no requirement for them in Queensland. Instead, you'll need to complete two CPD sessions every CPD year:
- Two Type 1 sessions (core competencies), or
- One Type 1 and one Type 2 session (focussed on service and communication)
Each session takes about 2–3 hours.
What Are the Different Types of CPD?
- Type 1 CPD sessions are linked to nationally accredited qualifications
- Type 2 sessions focus on communication, ethics, and business skills topics
Both are valuable depending on your role and career goals.
What are the Annual CPD Requirements for Real Estate Agents in Queensland?
Your real CPD year starts on the anniversary of your real estate licence or certificate issue date. You'll need to meet your CPD obligations by the end of each CPD year. The REIQ is ready to help you stay on top of your obligations.
What Does CPD Stand for in Real Estate?
Continuing Professional Development real estate training is structured learning that improves your skills and knowledge across the real estate industry. It helps reduce risks, boosts professionalism, and strengthens your service delivery.
Who Needs to Do CPD?
Whether you’re a residential salesperson, property manager, assistant agent, business broker, auctioneer, assistant real estate agent, resident letting agent or commercial agent, you'll need to do CPD real estate training. Essentially, real estate licence and certificate holders must complete their annual CPD to stay compliant.
What’s the Purpose of CPD?
Continuing Professional Development is not just about compliance, it makes you better at what you do. Real estate CPD enhances your professional skills, improves client outcomes, and keeps you up to date with evolving industry trends.
Where Can I Complete My CPD requirements?
Only an approved training provider like the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) can deliver CPD training that meets Office of Fair Trading standards. We're delighted to offer a range of courses tailored to suit you, no matter what sector you work in.
The REIQ’s Role as a Registered Training Organisation in CPD

- Online self-paced learning
- Live and recorded webinars
- Suite of online video resources
- Face-to-face training and events
They support all learning styles ranging from self-paced learning to an interactive environment.
Learn Anytime, Anywhere
Thanks to the REIQ's options, real estate agents can study when it suits them. Whether you're on the road, in the office, or working from home, your CPD is always within reach.
How to Keep Track of CPD
The REIQ offers a CPD tracker to help you monitor your progress, stay within your CPD period, and avoid any hiccups at renewal time.
Proof Matters
You'll need to provide evidence of completed CPD courses. The REIQ is here to help you complete, track and provide evidence of your Continuing Professional Development. We are your one stop shop when it comes to completing your real estate CPD year.
What if I Can’t Complete CPD?
In some exceptional circumstances, like serious illness, the Office of Fair Trading may allow exemptions. You can find out about exceptional circumstances on the Fair Trading website.
CPD and the Law
The Office of Fair Trading is overseeing real estate CPD requirements. Think of it like NSW Fair Trading, which already mandates CPD for real estate agencies and professionals.
Getting Aligned with Other States
These new rules bring Queensland in line with other jurisdictions like New South Wales, where CPD requirements have long been enforced. The REIQ was at the forefront of advocacy for CPD in Queensland as a means of raising industry standards and enhancing the real estate profession's reputation.
Industry Trends Are Front and Centre
Expect more Continuing Professional Development CPD sessions tailored to current industry trends, market insights, and technology shifts that are shaping real estate practice. The REIQ will consistently update its CPD offerings to reflect legislative changes, best practice and industry trends.
Planning Your Training
Create a simple training plan to choose the right CPD course for your role. As a registered training organisation, the REIQ is ready to help guide you through this process.
Not All Training Counts Towards CPD
Some other training might enhance your knowledge but won’t necessarily meet legal CPD standards. Check with your approved CPD providers to be sure. Non-official-CPD training isn't necessarily bad. The REIQ supports quality professional development training that enhances your professionalism and service standards.
CPD for Life
CPD really is about making you better at what you do. Look at real estate CPD as a long-term investment in your career—not just another box to tick over your CPD period.
Stay Ahead with the REIQ
As the peak body and Queensland's leading real estate training provider, the REIQ continually updates its training content to reflect changes in legislation, technology, and client expectations for licence and certificate holders.
A Checklist for Compliance
Here’s what you need to do each CPD year:
