Life on the REIQ Board with Linda Bland
After nearly a decade serving as a Director on the REIQ Board, Hervey Bay-based real estate professional Linda Bland shares her experiences, discussing how the role has provided invaluable opportunities for professional growth and networking. She also reflects proudly on her involvement in shaping the future of the REIQ and supporting the real estate profession across Queensland.
With director nominations now open, Linda provides her insights into what life is like on the REIQ Board.
Linda, tell us a little about your background.
I originally didn’t plan to work in real estate. I was in marketing but changed careers when I was asked to do a property management role in the commercial agency I was employed in. Real estate must have been for me because I bought the agency three years later! I have owned this business for 18 years. I have also been on the REIQ Board for almost 10 years, so it is time for me to hand on the baton.
What inspired you to nominate for the REIQ Board of Directors?
I was the local REIQ zone chair at the time and also on the Commercial Chapter. I enjoyed working with the REIQ so I was interested in being more involved and helping shape the future of the REIQ. I also thought my experience being in a regional location and a commercial agent would give a voice to other members like myself.
What have been some of the benefits of being on the Board?
I have found the role very rewarding, although sometimes challenging. It gives you a variety of work, broadens your networks and I believe you can apply many of the skills you learn along the way to your own business.
What are some of the achievements you and the Board have achieved during your tenure?
I am really proud of REIQ’s success and how it is continually evolving to remain relevant and helpful to the profession. We’ve worked hard to lobby the government on some key issues affecting our profession and given members tools to help adapt to the changes in legislation. Our courses and training, as well as our services, have improved greatly.
I’m proud the Board introduced changes to the constitution which provide for a much more balanced board (such as the under-35 category and the female regional role) so that it is much more representative of our members. The differences in opinion ultimately lead to much more diverse conversations which contribute to better decision making. Another achievement the Board achieved during my tenure was the relocation of the REIQ offices to Cannon Hill.
Nominations for the REIQ's Board of Directors are now open. What qualities or characteristics should a potential Board Director possess?
Potential directors would benefit from previous experience on a board as well as strong financial literacy. But most importantly you need to be a team player, respectful, open to new ideas and be passionate about improving our profession.
Why should REIQ members consider nominating themselves for the two available Board Director positions?
It is a great opportunity to give back to the profession we all want to ensure stays relevant and successful. Being on the Board is incredibly rewarding and you have the opportunity of working with great people and helping steer the future of the REIQ and supporting our profession.
The REIQ is on the lookout for a Young Director and Female Regional Director to join the Board. Find out more here.
