New era for the REIQ Board

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is marking a new chapter in its century-long history, as outgoing Chair Peter Brewer concludes his remarkable decade of service on the REIQ Board – eight of those as Chair.
At today’s Annual General Meeting, the REIQ paid tribute to Mr Brewer, acknowledging his outstanding leadership and transformative contributions to the organisation and the profession.
REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said Peter’s legacy was defined by modernisation, reform, and resilience during some of the Queensland real estate professions most challenging and tumultuous years.
“Peter brought a unique, progressive, and refreshing approach to the role of Chair, coupled with a fiery passion for our profession that is inextinguishable.
“Under his stewardship, the REIQ achieved some of the most significant milestones in its history – embedding diversity into our Constitution, modernising operations through digitisation, keeping real estate moving through the pandemic, helping to overturn the multi-jurisdictional land tax and seeing continuing professional development become a reality.
“The REIQ is far more strong, influential, representative and responsive to the needs of our membership and the profession thanks to Peter’s guidance. We will sorely miss his trademark humour, sharp wit, and colourful presence around the Board table.”
In his reflections on his tenure at the REIQ, Mr Brewer said it had been the privilege of his professional life to serve REIQ members.
“Together with a talented Board and executive team, we kept our eyes on two horizons at once: making members’ work easier today and shaping fairer policy for tomorrow,” he said.
“When the emails were loud and the headlines louder, I’d remember why we do it: because good housing markets help families, and great practice helps communities.
“Aside from fatherhood, serving on the Board of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland has been without question the biggest honour of my life. Thank you - for the trust, the debates, the votes, the coffees, the candour and the chance to serve.”
New Chair to guide the next stages of the REIQ
The REIQ is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Camphin to the role of Chair of the Board, effective immediately.  He first joined the REIQ Board in 2020 as a General Member Director. With over 45 years' experience in real estate both domestically and internationally, Peter Camphin has worked across a diverse range of property management and sales roles, having owned multiple real estate businesses, held positions in governance and advisory, and directed state and national franchising operations across Australia and New Zealand as the former CEO of Ray White Queensland – a position he held for almost 20 years. Along with his subsequent ventures in finance brokering, he has a versatile skill set and commitment to driving success. Ms Mercorella welcomed Mr Camphin to the role and said she looked forward to furthering the goals of the REIQ together, as the peak body tackles more significant legislative reform. At the AGM, incoming Chair Peter Camphin said he was honoured to lead the REIQ into its next phase. “Lifting the standards of professionalism has been something very dear to me, along with lifting the recognition and the reputation of the people who work in this profession. “Peter Brewer has left an indelible mark and it’ll be here for a long time. We have such a proud history, and I look forward to building on the legacy of those who came before me.”
Two Director positions elected
In accordance with the Institute’s Constitution and by-laws, two Director positions were contested by a vote of the membership and announced at today’s AGM.
Laura Valenti was re-elected as Female Member Director, and Darren Cole was newly elected as General Member Director.
REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella congratulated both the returning and incoming Directors on their successful campaigns and appointments.
“It’s a delight to welcome back Laura Valenti to the Board, whose re-election reflects the membership’s confidence in her leadership and dedication over the past six years.
“Equally, it’s great to introduce a fresh set of eyes and get new thinking around the board table with the appointment of Darren - an Owner and Director of an independent office in the Bayside area, with over 23 years’ experience in the real estate sector.
“Darren has been actively engaged with the REIQ over the past two years, supporting us as a member of the Residential Sales Chapter Committee and as a Chapter representative on AUSTRAC’s Industry Forum.”
Mr Cole said it was a great privilege and responsibility to serve the real estate profession at a strategic level and gave thanks to his mentors and supporters.
“With a real estate career spanning more than two decades, including first-hand experience in a variety of roles and segments, I trust I’m well placed to make a positive contribution to the REIQ’s work for our members and broader industry,” he said.
