School leavers drawn to real estate, says REIQ

Schools out! Real estate is in! This National Skills Week (25-31 August), the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is celebrating the strong uptake of high school students planning their path into the real estate profession.

During July and August, the REIQ engaged with over 15,000 students, parents and career changers at five major career expos in Toowoomba, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Mackay and Townsville – with the peak body impressed by the appetite for real estate careers.

It comes as a key real estate training program (CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice) is now available to be delivered as part of senior studies in Queensland high schools, with graduates potentially able to turn that education into a real estate licence once they turn 18 and complete year 12.

REIQ Head of Training Jeff Irvine said the Certificate IV program creates a feeder pathway into the real estate profession, equipping students with the skills and qualifications to kick start their careers early.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding to connect with so many young Queenslanders who are genuinely excited about starting a career in real estate and are keen to enter the profession straight after school,” Mr Irvine said.

“University isn’t for everyone, and the passion, curiosity, and enthusiasm we’ve seen from students yearning for a different path that plays to their strengths has been inspiring.

“With property being an integral part of all our lives, as well as real estate being a national fascination, it feels familiar and accessible to students who may not fit the mould of university or are inspired by those they see excelling in the industry.

“The program has also been popular with students who use their real estate licence to gain valuable work experience while also pursuing their university studies.

“Another reason the program is highly attractive to high school students is because it bodes well for their ATAR Ranking (setting a minimum of 74) supporting future pathways to university, as well as earning QCE points (8) towards their year 11 and 12 studies.

“I’m proud that the REIQ is providing real pathways and meaningful career opportunities for the next generation, while also supporting our members by helping them connect with future talent.”

Mr Irvine said intergenerational impact in real estate was surprisingly common.

“It seems like real estate almost becomes part of their blood – with many generations in the same family following the footsteps of those before them in real estate,” he said.

“For example, one new entrant to the REIQ’s Certificate IV program is the grandson of the late REIQ Life Member David Cameron, reflecting the legacy of real estate within families.

“Sometimes all you need is a role model, a mentor, or the support of a parent, to encourage you in a profession that may not be as academic but is highly rewarding.”

Mr Irvine said interest in the Certificate IV program continues to grow with a number of schools across the state currently exploring how they can adopt the program into their senior curriculum.

“The future of this program is bright as the REIQ continues to collaborate with schools and trade colleges looking to expand their delivery options in 2026 and beyond,” he said.
