Declaration of Real Estate Services as Essential Services

We write to seek confirmation that real estate services will be deemed ‘essential services’ in the event of further restrictions or potential lockdown periods in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Whilst the provision of shelter itself is clearly an essential need, it is critical that the role of the real estate professional is protected to enable the ongoing sale and purchase and management of shelter.

Real Estate Relief Package

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (“REIQ”) is seeking urgent action from the Queensland State Government to assist in maintaining the stability of the Queensland property market in the face of the economic impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Queensland’s residential real estate sector is worth over $1 trillion1 and employs over 50,000 Queenslanders directly with many more employed in associated industries. Activity within the real estate sector contributes in excess of $30 billion every year to the Queensland Government.

REIQ Stamp Duty Policy Statement

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to generating economic activity in the real estate sector. Real estate plays an integral role in the Queensland economy, contributing more than $8 billion per annum toward Queensland’s gross state product. With real estate vital to Queensland’s prosperity, it is important that measures are put in place to encourage economic growth and maximise the choices available to consumers.

Negative Gearing

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is urging the federal government to reject any proposals to reform negative gearing arrangements in the Australian property market. Allowing individuals to offset net losses from property investment against ordinary income helps to incentivise investment in property. This assists in helping to make rent as affordable as possible for low-income members of the community and helps to ease pressure on public housing.

Seller Disclosure in Queensland

The REIQ supports the adoption of a single statutory disclosure regime to improve consistency across all residential property transactions in Queensland and streamline the contractual process. However, our support is given on the basis that the buyer should not be excused from performing their own due diligence to ensure that the property meets their requirements, and that the long-standing doctrine of caveat emptor is not displaced.
