Identifying Signs Of Stress

Business, Industry News, Journal,  Journal,  Principals,  Property Managers,  Salespeople

We all experience stress differently in different situations. Sometimes you might be able to tell right away when you’re feeling under stress, but other times you might keep going without recognising it. A few signs can indicate whether your stress is a serious issue.

The impacts of COVID-19 have put a spotlight on the importance of mental wellbeing and the role we all play in reducing mental health stigma and discrimination. Mental health does not discriminate. Despite workplace mental health being an issue that requires greater attention, mental health statistics show that only half of Australians believe they are working in a supportive, healthy environment.

Recent ABS data indicates that 1 in 5 Australians are likely to experience a mental health condition in any given year. Identifying the early warning signs of stress or mental health issues is a crucial step in managing it – both for yourself, and for your employees.

Identifying the Signs of Stress in Yourself

Managing your own mental wellbeing is the first step toward supporting your employees. As a small business owner, you’re not alone, with many facing worries that keep them up at night through no fault of their own. Being solely responsible for your business’s success or failure can takes its toll, overlaid with impacts outside of your control, including the current economic downturn.

So it’s unsurprising that more than half of small business owners  experience mental health issues at some point. While sometimes the signs that you’re struggling may be more evident to a family member, friend or business partner, there are some physical changes that you can look out for in recognising that you may need support. Some of these include:

  • Sleep (having trouble falling asleep even when you feel tired);
  • Fatigue (always feeling tired regardless of how much rest and/or sleep you’ve had);
  • Depression;
  • Feeling nervous, anxious, irritable or on edge (even if there’s nothing worrying you);
  • Trouble concentrating, focusing or making decisions;
  • Becoming frustrated when asked for directions from your employees;
  • Overeating or having no appetite;
  • Withdrawing from family or friends;
  • Tearfulness or frequent crying;
  • Tense muscles, shakiness or trembling;
  • Stomach pain, upset stomach or headache;
  • Lower productivity at work; and,
  • Drug or alcohol abuse (especially if you’re finding you’re reaching for a drink more and more often as a way of coping).

If you do feel you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s important to seek help. It doesn’t need to be professional support in the first instance – speaking to a friend or family member is a great first step. Alternatively, contact your local GP.

Identifying the Signs in your Employees

Your employees are just as susceptible to mental health issues as you are. The health of your business is highly dependent on the wellbeing of employees. However, while mental illness is treatable, Australian government data shows  that around two thirds of people with a mental illness do not seek any treatment. The challenge for you as an employer lies in identifying the signs in your employees, given they may not be so obvious. Some subtle warning signs include:

  • Frequent absenteeism (an employee is suddenly calling in sick more often);
  • Withdrawing from workplace social banter;
  • Always looking tired or sleep deprived (this may be an indication of sleep problems or fatigue);
  • Unusually frequent toilet breaks (may indicate stomach problems caused by stress);
  • Easily becoming defensive or irritable when questioned;
  • Lower productivity at work; and,
  • Always seems distracted.

If your employees are demonstrating any of the above signs, be supportive in your interactions; ask how they’re doing because you’re concerned, and most importantly – listen. Encourage them to explain what’s going on, and how they are feeling. Their challenges may or may not be work related, and it’s important to be respectful of how much your employees are willing to share with you. Some good options for action might include them talking to a trusted family member or friend; helping them find professional support such as their GP, doctor or via community support such as Beyond Blue or LifeLine.

If you feel there is work related stress, we suggest keeping an open mind and working together to find solutions on how to improve the situation. You can read more about managing workplace stress here.

And finally, remember to check back in and see how they are doing. If they haven’t done anything, don’t judge them. Understand that sometimes it can take a while before they’re ready to seek help. Most people are afraid to reach out and feel they won’t be supported and cannot be helped. Try to reinforce the benefits of seeking professional help and trying different avenues.

I dont normally complete surveys but felt that I wanted to share that this lady has inspired me to give sales ago and I never thought i would say that as i have been a PM and honestly never thought I could see myself as a sales agent... Thanks Mel for such a great two days

I wasnt sure that I would get through the Agents and Licence course with everything I had on, made an attempt a year ago with another provider that went totally pear shaped but the REIQ course is structured in a way that made sense. While all of their trainers are experts in their field, they offer onsite student support on Tuesdays with Rachel providing the right advice and reassurance to get you there, even if you havent studied for a while. If you've ever wanted a career in Real Estate this is where you get started!

I found the REIQ Real Estate Licence Online Training Course was very good, easy to access, with brilliant course materials to read and assignments that really checked on your understanding of the details of every aspect of real estate practise. I enjoyed the course even though it took a few months due to working full time and found the support of the trainers and assessors very helpful and encouraging. Thanks REIQ Training team for helping me through!

I would like to share with you our experience that we have recently had through the REIQ Professional Development Team.We have had an awesome start to 2020 thanks to the great service provided by the REIQ Professional Development Team. Congratulations to Liz who started and finished her Certificate of Registration Course with the REIQ in December 2019. She loved the training, particularly the fact the trainers are experienced and still walk the talk and are active in real estate. Fast turnaround for marking of the assessments with help on hand by way of tutoring if needed meant she could get the Application to Office of Fair Trading for her registration happening quickly. We are thrilled, from start to finish with the course and application to Fair Trading she had her Certificate of Registration within 5 weeks. Really impressed with the training, help and support team REIQ gave Liz and the quick processing time by the Office of Fair Trading.We also regularly use the Property Management Support Service and General Agency Advice Service and believe it offers great value for our membership. The PMSS team provide practical advice by practising property management professionals who can relate to the everyday challenges property managers face.Keep up the good work Team REIQ,

Recently completed my Licence course and thoroughly enjoyed the in-class tutorials taught by highly professional trainers with many years of industry experiences. The student support that is available every Tuesday is an extremely helpful resource, again with very experienced trainers to ensure you get the right advice the first time. REIQ has really structured the entire full Licence course end to end thoughtfully, especially when you’re new to this industry. Highly recommended!

I contacted REIQ, as I wanted to upgrade my real estate licence to a full licence. I have now completed the necessary upgrade and I just wanted to thank all the staff and trainers who were my guides during this time. Particular mention to Rachael Wilschefski who did everything she could to help me and was a joy to talk to, Trudi Fleet was a fantastic support to me and a big thank you to the assessing team. If anyone is considering using REIQ to get their licence or upgrade, I highly recommend using REIQ. Once again, thank you. Helen Knight

In February I decided to take steps to buy management rights to a unit complex. As I have not studied for some time I chose REIQ to do my RLA course. Initially I didn’t engage the help through student support but it came to a point I needed some assistance. Selina Randall and Connie McKee were wonderful help. I personally feel they went over and beyond to help me complete the course and enable me to follow through with final settlement of the new business in just a few weeks Thank you so very much ladies. You were both amazing
